Our dearest toy friends sometimes travel by our side throughout life. Sleeping toys often become most dear to us as they comfort us in the dark and hear our secrets. We assign special meaning to toys we’re emotionally attached to.

Human characteristics such as loyalty, friendliness or the roles of comforter or co-adventurer are easily assigned to a stuffed animal or a doll. Superhero figures can fight off bad guys and protect their owner. Any toy can have a “soul”.

Anthropomorphized toys can be viewed as active playmates with individual feelings and opinions, who miss you back if they’re discarded.
